I have written about variety of topics and literature reviews. Topics include bilingual instructions and students’ math scores, Somali children’s success in Minnesota schools, achievement gap: where are we missing the point?, equity, leadership, Islam, health, modernization, science, and contemporary writing, both in class assignments and out of class assignments. Following are some samples of my papers.

Somali Children's Success in Minnesota Schools
In this qualitative research paper, I want to explore if Somali parents think their children who are going to K-12 Minnesota school system, especially in the Twin Cities metro area are successful in school, what makes them successful and are there some barriers that prevent their children to be successful in school. What improvement can be made to the school system to help their children succeed, and finally what are they doing as parents to help their children succeed in school.. |

Correlation Between Bilingual Instruction and Students’ Math Scores
I chose this hypothesis for several reasons. First, public school classrooms are getting more diverse with bilingual students, especially in the Twin Cities metro area. Second, the achievement gap with grade level students is high (Capps, Fix, Murray, Ost, Passel, & Herwantoro, 2005). Third, many of the bilingual students enter the classroom with disadvantaged academic backgrounds (Kruizenga, 2010). For these reasons among others, I will investigate if students’ math score will improve if they are taught by a bilingual teacher who is proficient in their first language. If the hypothesis is validated, this would support the theory that more bilingual teachers in the classroom could help reduce the achievement gap. |

Achievement Gap: Where are We Missing the Point?
Educators, politicians and intellectuals alike wrote and talked about this pressing issue in great details. Why high number of students of color are behind in test scores, graduation rates and higher education than their Caucasian counterparts. Many of the inequalities that behind the achievement gap include; lack of early education, stable family, parents’ level of education, income, housing, school type and resources of the school, quality of the teachers, neighborhood and community vitality that many poor and students of color happen to live in. All these impact and play role in students’ performance in school. Unfortunately, many of these inequalities were manufactured by the system—the root cause of the problem is the system itself. |
